The University of Cambridge has a rich history of both men’s and women’s cricket and Cambridge University Women’s Cricket Club (CUWCC) gives students the chance to be a part of this tradition, with records dating back to the 1940s, while also promoting and participating in a rapidly developing women’s sport.
CUWCC fulfils a valuable role, catering for complete beginners and experienced cricketers studying at Cambridge University. We hold two training sessions a week in the indoor cricket school at Fenner’s* during the Michaelmas and Lent terms, one of which is aimed at introducing new players to the game, the other aimed at more experienced cricketers. We also hold an intensive pre-season training week just before the start of the Summer term, giving everyone the chance to consolidate what they have learnt before the season gets under way. During the summer, we train outdoors twice a week.
CUWCC play a range of matches, including MCC, the Army and other clubs. Cambridge University students are eligible to play in the one-day University Match against the Oxford Women at the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground for which a half Blue is awarded. Full Blues are awarded to players who meet the relevant performance criteria. We also play a Twenty20 fixture against Oxford which alternates between Cambridge and Oxford each year.
Cambridge University and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) are jointly entered into the MCCU programme, giving promising players access to top level coaching and competitive cricket alongside studying for their degree. Every year the MCCU enters a single team, comprising ARU and Cambridge University players, into the BUCS Midlands 1 A league to play several 30 over matches against other universities.

*To find Fenner's Cricket School, go to the far side of Parker’s Piece opposite Kelsey Kerridge Sports Centre. Cross over at the traffic lights onto Gresham Road and follow the road straight ahead for 100m. The cricket school is on your left. The entrance is through a wooden gate to the right of the old university PE centre. Continue down the path and then round to your right to the Cricket School.
CUWCC are grateful to Chase Cricket for support during the 2016 season.
